Video reviews: Week 6

Installation Art Video

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

I learned that during installation art the artist is very particular about where and how the art is set up. They want their art to look the best that it possibly could and if one little aspect of it isn’t what the artist has envisioned the art could be ruined. It needs to be perfect. Installation art can use anything that the artist wants and could be placed anywhere the artist invasions.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

The textbook shows installations artwork. There are different types and the video helped with giving more examples. The textbook and the video together has helped me develop ideas to use for project # 3.  They both help further explain installation art and how artist use this type of work to express themselves.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics: Sculpture, Installation, and Craft?

The video gave me a greater understanding of the concept of installation art. I helped me think of some ideas to use for project #3. The film is good to watch and it wasn’t too long and was able to give a good understanding of installation art.

Glass and Ceramics Video

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

Stained glass windows are so interesting the techniques that they use are so interesting. First they go view the space and decide what colors would work well in the space. Next they draw a replica of the window would look like. The artist uses the replica to create the window. They cut out pieces of the window and put them between lead strips. The strips are molded together and the glass is covered in clay. After all these steps are completed the window is ready to be installed.  I also like the illustrations of the ceramics are made. The video shows how the clay is hardened in the heat and what is needed to make it a good ceramic piece.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

I liked how the video showed the different way that crafts and glass artwork can be created. It again highlights the book. I felt the book goes into further details of the background where it was created and who started creating it, while the video was good at showing how the art is created.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics: Sculpture, Installation, and Craft?

I really liked this video, I have always wanted to go to the Corning Museum of Glass. It was interesting to see how glass is made and how stained glass windows are created. Watching the videos help put what was read into a better understanding.  It helps to watch the video to further the understanding of how ceramics are made and the quality are based on the materials are used and the temperature of the fire that is used to make the ceramic art. It is really interesting to watch and learn about.

Through the Eyes of a Scultpure

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

A sculpture needs to make sure the limestone is sound and no cracks. There is a specific sound it makes if there is a crack and it isn’t able to be used if there is a crack in it. Marble, clay and limestone are all able to be used in sculpture.  When creating pieces he needs to make sure he considers all the conditions that the sculpture will be in so he can make sure that the sculpture will last. Also when creating the sculpture he needs to make sure that the sculptures are sound and able to last for a long time without breaking under pressure.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

The textbook shows a lot of different examples of sculptures and explains how they are created but the video goes into more detail and actually shows you how he created these sculptures. These artworks are wonderful and it is fantastic to see how he is able to make them by chipping away pieces of limestone and creating these magnificent pieces.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics: Sculpture, Installation, and Craft?

I again liked this video because I was able to see how he chipped the limestone away and created these magnificent sculptures. He is very talented and explains a lot of his work in the video. He is able to give a greater understanding of what it is like to create a sculpture.

Reviewing Peer Artwork.

 1. Hyperlink the Blogs you reviewed into your Blog

2. When looking at Project #1: (Elements and Principles), did you agree with the element or principle the artist listed with the images? Did you see other elements and principles in the images?

As I looked at both Kelly and Benjamin’s project #1 I think that some of their pictures could be used for different elements and principles, but I think that even with my pictures that they can be interchanged each picture isn’t only going to show one particular element or principle it may show one, two or more. These elements and principles are all over and are shown in a variety of ways.

3. When looking at Project #2: Where there any images in the Peer Blogs the same as your own? If yes, what were they? Where the reasons the image was selected the same or different as your own?

None of the images where the same as the works I picked for my blog. Kelly went to an art gallery in Rochester, so I do not think that they have any of the same works as the Albright Knox. I’m not sure which museum Benjamin went to. I think it may have been the Burch-Penny. I had gone there for another class and some of the works seem familiar but I don’t think it was from when I went to visit the Albright Knox. Also, some of the works he chose from Charles Burchfield.

4. Where there any images that your Peers selected that pique your interest now? If yes, what are they and what is your connection with them? What would you want to know about them?

The work that Benjamin picked that I liked was Sailor with Guitar Bronze (1914) by Jacques Lipchitz. I want to know who the man was in the sculpture and was he a model or just someone that he created in his work.  How long did it take to create this sculpture? The work that Kelly chose that I liked was, David Higgins’ Billboard, Louisiana (2006) Painting Oil on Wood. This painting is so realistic that I at first thought it was a photo, but I really had to look to see that it was a painting. I really like this type of painting and always want to know how the artist is able to paint such a realistic painting. I think it is such talent that the artist has to create something that looks so real. It really is amazing.

5. What do you think about the process of reading your peers reflection? Do you find this to be a valuable in your learning?

Yes I think it was valuable learning experience. I think that it is a great opportunity to show others the work that you have sent a lot of time working on. Looking at my peers work gives me an opportunity to see what others think and value in art.

6. Check your Blog and read comments posted by your Peers. Do you find their comments helpful?

I only had one comment. She liked how I connected with the art that I picked and it was true some of the art that I chose reminded me of part of my life and that is why I chose these works of art.  Her comment was a little helpful to me because it showed that I was explaining myself how I wanted to when I was reviewing these works.

My logo.

1. Discuss what you thought about creating your logo.

I really wanted to create a logo that was creative and expressed the four main parts of myself. I really wanted to be creative and as I looked online for different logos. I noticed a lot of logos had symbols but I didn’t know what they meant. For example the NBC logo, I have no idea what the circle/rings mean. I know the logo and I would be able to recognize it but I don’t know what it means. The Olympics is another example. I wanted to make sure that I had my logo parts labeled.

2. Describe the process: creative thinking skills and ideas you used in the logo creation.

I knew I wanted squares I liked the idea of having straight lines in my logo and the squares helped me with that. I wasn’t exactly sure how I wanted to arrange the squares that were part of my first sketches. When I figured out the square arrangements I wasn’t sure how I wanted the colors. I wanted bold colors so it would “pop.” When I labeled what the squares meant I found that I couldn’t paint over the letters. I tested it on a scrap paper and you couldn’t see the letters after the paint dried. I didn’t want to use colored pencils or crayons because I wanted the bold colors.  So I left the labels on the outer sides of the squares to have a uniformed look for my logo. So my final logo had more white than I originally wanted but I wanted labels and this is the only way that would work with my design.

3. What was the most important discovery you made in the creation of your logo?

The most important discovery I made was the paint and how I wouldn’t be able to write and cover it with paint and still have the words shown through. Also I had to think about myself and what most described myself and what I wanted to show people about me. These four things are the most important parts of myself; I am a father, a son, a boyfriend and I am currently a security guard but I really would like to become a police officer so that square would change as soon as I get that job.

4. What is the most important information you learned from watching the videos, powerpoint, and reading material  for this project? What is your opinion of the videos?

The most important thing that I had learned from the videos is that when creating a new label that is easily recognizable it is really hard because you want to stay close to the original and yet you still need something new that people with feel comfortable with. Designers do not want to be the one to mess up a label of a popular product.

So much goes into making and designing a label this is truly an art form. Graphic designers need to know about the laws of similarity, closeness and proximity and experience. They need to know how the elements and principles and how when I figure is close enough to looking like an shape for example a triangle but maybe it’s missing a line the human eye still makes it into a triangle. All of this is something a graphic designer needs to study and understand before they can make a logo for a company. They need to know and understand how the public will react to the logo to make it the best for the company.

I like the videos they gave a lot of information and it moved quickly. They were able to explain logos and how a new label could be redesigned for a company.  These were interesting videos and were able to keep interest while watching.

First Gallery Visit: Albright Knox

A.) Which artworks make an impact or impression on me? Why?

1. Camille Pissarro Peasants in the Field, Eragony 1890 Oil on Canvas

This work impressed me because of the use of pointillism. You can see the artist’s use of the paintbrush sort of like she put the brush up then put it back down again. These points on the canvas are so interesting because I wouldn’t have thought that all of these different points could work together to become one painting. This painting made me feel that I could be standing right in the field with them.

2. Paul Shartis Frozen Film Frame Senesca 1971-1976 16mm filmstrips and Plexiglas

This work impressed me because this work really shows that anything can be turned into art. I have seen film strips and I would have never thought to make this type of art work. I just assumed that filmstrips would sit in a drawer and wait until they were thrown away, someone had enough creativity to take all of these strips and put them together to make this. When I first walked into the room I thought that this was a woven rug or blanket. It wasn’t until I got a lot closer that I realized it wasn’t cloth it was film strips. I really enjoyed this work.

B.) Which artworks do I feel a connection with? Why?

1. Giacomo Bella Dinamismo diun Caneal Guinzaglio (dynasm of a Dog on leash) 1912 Oil on Canvas

I connected with this painting because I grew up with dogs my whole life. I even had a Daushound which it looks like this is the dog in the painting. It reminded me of when my dad would walk him and he walked so fast that my dog had to run to keep up. It looks like this painting. I really liked this painting.

2. Juan Gris Le Canigou 1921 Oil on Canvas

This painting of a guitar and music reminded me of my son. He is learning to play a guitar by his grandfather and taking lessons at school. He always has his guitar out with the music. When I saw this it just immediately reminded me of him.

C.) Which artworks would I like to know more about? Why?

1. Max Beckmann Hotel Lobby 1950 Oil on Canvas

This painting grabbed my attention because of the dark blank and the use of bolder colors and then the painting left me with wanting to know more. Why did he want to paint this so dark? Where was this hotel lobby? Was it a real lobby or did he just create his own lobby? Why are there so many people? Where these people travelers or local people? Why were most of the people looking outward towards me?

2. Michelangelo Pistoletto Sacre Conversazione 1963 Tissue paper on stainless steel

This work immediately got my attention and I wanted to know more about these people? Did they know each other? How well did they know each other? What are they talking about? Why did they look concerned? What did these people do? Where are the people from?

Color Wheel and Value Scale

Color Wheel

Value Scale

1. Discuss what you thought about creating the Value Scale and Color Wheel.

I liked making both the value and color wheel. I do not get to use acrylic paint or charcoal pencils at all. I do not think that I have used them since high school art class. I liked using these materials to create these two different things. It also made it more valuable when learning about the color wheel and value scale. The color wheel I have seen a hundred times but I never really had created one.

2. Which media did you enjoy working with the best and why?

I liked using the acrylic paint the best. I liked mixing the paint and trying to get the best secondary colors I could make. Sometimes I did not have enough yellow when I mixed cyan and yellow to get the green, so I need more then I had too much so I need to add more blue. This went back and forth until I had the perfect green I wanted. I did not care the charcoal pencil because I was too thinking I was going to press too hard when I got to the white side of the value scale. The charcoal was a little messy too. It seemed to get everywhere. It was all over my paper and hand. I’m not sure if this is normal for charcoal pencils or if it was just me.

3. What was the most important discovery in the creation of these studies?

I think the most important thing was the primary colors that I have always known are not the primary colors. Magenta, yellow and cyan are the true primary colors. Mixing these colors create black if you mix the colors red, blue and yellow only create brown.

4. What is the most important information you learned from watching the videos for this project? What is your opinion of the videos?

The most important thing that I have learned was the primary colors are not red, blue and yellow. It seems like it is built into your brain as a child that those are the three primary colors. Also, mixing red, blue and yellow create brown not black which is what you get when you mix magenta, cyan and yellow. I like the videos they were quick and showed everything that was needed to understand the material and how to create the projects.

Photo Bucket Slideshow

You can find my PhotoBucket SlideShow on this Website

http://s1247.photobucket.com/albums/gg636/cruzrs001/?action=view&current=ab2bcd62.pbw

I found this project at first very interesting, and I did not realize how difficult it would be until I started to take pictures. This week was a good week to have this project because I had planned a little day trip to Alleghany, so some of my pictures are from here and other pictures are from my house.

While I was taking pictures I would first review the book again to make sure that understood the elements and principles before I took a picture. I then thought about where I wanted to take a picture and if it would be the best place to take the pictures. When I took the picture, I made sure that I had each element and principle pictured correctly. It took me a few days to finish taking all of my pictures and decide which picture was better to fit the particular element or principles.

1. Line: This was my hammock. I wanted to show the lines the ropes made.
2. Shape: A doll and bear in the window I wanted to show the shape of the two together and the shape that they have made.
3. Light: I was trying to show the way that the light hit my car and how the light had shown off of it.
4. Color: The vibrant color the flowers can be seen in the this picture.
5. Texture: The texture of my Dog's (Gabi) fur, you can almost see how fluffy she is.
6. Unity: The flowers create a sense of unity.
7. Balance: Balance can be seen with Gabi in the middle and the ripples around her.
8. Emphasis: The single flower on this rose bush shows emphasis.
9. Scale: The massive rock and my son on it shows the differences in scale.
10. Rhythm: The repeated spokes of the railing over and over can be seen to show a rhythm.
11. Porportion: The way the petals of the Rose shows porportion on all sides of the rose.
12. Motion: The flag waving in the wind show's motion of the flag.
13.Space: The bird feeder is shown  in the empty space all around it.
14. Variety: Variety is shown in the one green square surrounded by the pink squares.

(I did have some difficulty with PhotoBucket. I tried multiple times to have all of my pcitures in the right direction. In my Album they are saved in the correct direction but when I went to make a slideshow they would revert back to their original position. I tried multiple times and I had always saved it, and it did save but it wouldn't be correct in the slideshow. Sorry if they are hard to see because of their position.)

Blog 3

1. Describe Color and it's effects on emotions. Use the appropriate vocabulary of color in your posting.

Color has a major effect on mood and emotions. While exploring My Art Studio I found it very interesting to see the effect color has on certain objects, for example, the Valentine’s day card was shown in pink and red both warm and loving colors. When the card turned to blue it gave me the sense of cold and negative feeling not like a Valentine’s Day card should be. When the stop sign was shown and the red light I felt the feeling to stop, but when the sign said stop and it was green I wanted to go because green means “go.” The intensity of the color also goes a long way in showing emotions. When a color is bright and high intensity has a brighter color hue while lower intensity has a duller and lighter color shade.

2. What is a theoretical aspect of color that most intrigues/fascinates you? Why?

The most intriguing part of color to me is Color Harmonies. I think it is so interesting how an artist can use one specific color hue and create a painting with such emotion and movement with just using one color, for example, Inka Essenhigh’s In Bed painting. This work of art is an example of Monochromatic painting. This is just demonstrates the artist’s talent and imagination when creating works of art. The artist needs to be able to see a work of art and how it will turn out and show the emotions that they want to express in their works of art.

3. In the Color video, what made the biggest impact on you in regards to color and it's effects on emotions?

During this video the biggest impact I had in regards to color was the way that artists can see it everywhere. I have never realized how much art and color is all around us. This artist went to Venice and on a street looking at a building she saw color and a lot of it. When I first looked at the same scene I saw a building and the only color that struck me was the color of a boat, it was nothing special to me but she saw art in the buildings and features around it. When her “rough sketch” was completed it was fantastic she shown such more color then I even saw until I saw how she saw it. It was very interesting to see the way an artist sees color and how she brought it out in her painting.

4. In the Feelings video, what made the biggest impact on you in regards to color and it's effects on emotions?

During the feeling video it was very interesting to see the effects of color and art in religious elements. The effects it has on the religious figures and how the figures are depicted in certain colors and how the color shows the mood and emotions during the scenes depicted. The power of color has a huge effect on the emotions you feel when you look at these works of art. The color can put a somber mood (dark colors)on painting or a happy (bright colors) or excited emotion while viewing a happy or exciting event that is depicted. The 18th century had a large impact of the art and use of color in artwork, greater number of artworks were being created with scenes of history and events that have happened during the time and not of Christianity.

Blog 2

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Philosophy of Art- Aesthetics is the study of beauty and art. This video goes through history and how different influential people had an impact on art and how aesthetics had been developed through history.
Neurobiology Neurology and Art and Aesthetics- gave a more in-depth look at the brain and how it affects the art and how the visual effects of art affect the brain. This video shows MRI’s of the brain and how after art is viewed and how art stimulates different parts of the brain and the mind. Both of the lectures wanted to give explanations of how the brain changes with respect to art it sees.

2. Which philosopher's theroy on aesthetics do you feel is most important? Be sure to mention the philosphers name, era (time in history), and contribtion to the aesthetic theory in your response.
Plato from the 5th century Plato stated that beauty attracted people. Art is beautiful and can attract people from everywhere. People are attracted to art because it is beautiful and everyone is attracted to beauty and by looking at art work the beauty can come out. Aesthetics is also part of the thinking of the nature of beauty and how it works in art work. Plato didn’t believe that poetry was a work of art. I feel that is it a work of art that express emotion in words rather than in art material like a piece of art would.

3. What do you think about Changeux and Ramachandran scientific view of aesthetics and art? What was the most interesting fact you discovered from each speakers lecture?
These lectures gave a lot of information and really wanted to share what they learned. Both of the scientists want to give a perspective of their learning. They both had “rules or laws” that give an explaination of how art affects the brains of the viewers. Changeux I liked how he showed the actual MRI’s of how emotions affected the brain. He could have just talked about the brain and how different parts of the brain were changed but actually showing it really gave a better understanding. Ramachandran discussed grouping and how your mind wants to group things together to show something. His example was the Dalmatian dog in the black and white splotches. The brain wants to make a connection and make something of the “chaos” it sees.

4. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The videos highlighted the reading of the textbook. It gave a more in-depth understanding and helped highlight information.

5. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics in your reading?
The videos did give more information than in the reading. It was more in-depth and gave more explanations than the textbook. The lectures were harder to understand because of their accents. The Philosophy of Art was more enjoyable to watch.

My first blog of AED 200

1. Creating a Gmail account was very easy and I was easily able to create an account. Creating the blog account was a little more confusing because I have never created a blog or ever had to use a blog ever for a class. I am excited to use it and I hope I can figure it out.

2. I hope to learn a lot from this class. I feel like I m not the greatest at art so I hope that this class will help me further learn about art. Having to take an art class makes me nervous because I do not know a lot about art or the making of pieces or art work.

3. I really like taking an online I have taken a few online classes and I like the freedom of doing a class on my own time and without the committment of going to class everyday.
